Under the Swiss Alps, a train crosses an entire mountain range in twenty minutes — flat, straight, no climb. Above it at the deepest point: nearly 2,450 meters of solid rock. This is the Gotthard Base Tunnel: 57.1km long, the longest and deepest railway tunnel on Earth, built over 17 years with four boring machines and a construction tolerance so precise that two drilling crews starting 15km apart met in the middle within 8 centimeters.
We break down the constraint (a country split by mountains for over a century), the idea (a flat tunnel at the base of the range instead of climbing over it), the build (five simultaneous access points, four record-setting boring machines), the obstacle (a geological danger zone that killed the original 1940s plan), and the result (a 12.2 billion franc engineering achievement that changed how Europe moves through the Alps).
