The Senzo Meyiwa murder trial takes another critical turn as Accused 3, Mncube, challenges the State's firearm evidence and raises serious questions about the weapon allegedly used in the fatal shooting of former Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa. In this courtroom exchange, Mncube refers to accounts from people who were inside the house on the night Senzo Meyiwa was killed. According to his argument, people who were present described a revolver being involved in the shooting. He then raises an important forensic question: if a revolver was used, how do we account for the cartridge cases reportedly found at the scene? Unlike a conventional semi-automatic pistol, a standard revolver does not automatically eject spent cartridge cases after firing. The cases normally remain inside the cylinder until they are manually removed. This distinction makes the relationship between the eyewitness accounts and the physical evidence an important issue to examine in the Senzo Meyiwa trial. But the revolver argument is only part of the courtroom exchange. Mncube also questions the circumstances surrounding the discovery of a bullet at the crime scene. He refers to searches allegedly conducted during the night when the bullet was reportedly not found, followed by a search the next day during which Lieutenant Colonel Kenel Mangena and another officer allegedly discovered it. He further refers to testimony concerning the removal of a bullet from a door. These questions bring the handling, recovery and examination of the physical evidence into focus. When evidence is recovered at different times and handled by different officials, the circumstances of its discovery, documentation and preservation become important to understanding the forensic case presented in court. Mncube also challenges aspects of the firearm examination associated with Mangena and refers to the evidence of another experienced forensic expert, Lieutenant Colonel Sirewa. The exchange raises questions about the testing process, the firearm's history and the reliability of the evidence being relied upon in the proceedings. The discussion then turns to a firearm reportedly stolen during a cash-in-transit robbery in Rabie Ridge in May 2013. The court hears a reference to earlier testimony concerning the incident, including the question of whether a case was opened after the firearm was stolen. The significance of this information depends on how the firearm in question relates to the evidence being discussed in court. So what exactly does Mncube's argument mean for the State's case? How do the accounts of the people who were inside the house compare with the forensic evidence? What questions arise from the discovery of the bullet and the subsequent firearm testing? In this video, we break down the courtroom exchange and examine the issues surrounding the revolver, cartridge cases, the recovered bullet and the firearm examination in the ongoing Senzo Meyiwa murder trial.
