How did humans turn teosinte, a weedy wild grass with only a handful of rock-hard kernels, into modern corn (maize)? In this video, we trace the domestication of corn from its wild ancestor in Mexico to the giant cobs we eat today. About 9,000 years ago, early farmers in southern Mexico began saving seeds from the best teosinte plants. Over thousands of years of selective breeding, a scraggly grass became the most produced crop on Earth. We cover where corn came from, how its ancestor was identified, and how people changed its seeds, cobs and size generation after generation. If you enjoy history explained simply, you'll like our other videos on how humans turned wild plants and animals into the ones we know today. #corn #teosinte #history
