IU Health's $4.3 billion Indianapolis hospital campus is designed so all 864 beds can support intensive care. Dennis Murphy, president and CEO of IU Health, explains the three 16-story towers and the years of cultural change needed to bring Methodist and University hospitals together. Speaking with Innovate or Evaporate host Toph Day, he discusses why building a unified team mattered before construction began.
Murphy traces his approach to leadership to his Chicago upbringing, four years in a seminary and an improvised job interview while driving an interviewer to the airport. He explains how moving from vice president to director taught him to lead through influence when people did not report to him.
The hospital discussion covers pandemic-ready rooms, flexible clinical spaces and ambient listening technology intended to reduce doctors' time at keyboards. Murphy describes plans for a December 2027 opening and explains how academic research and clinical trials connect to patient care across the state.
He also proposes using AI to handle billing and reimbursement, then retraining staff for other roles instead of eliminating their jobs. Other topics include rural access, cancer screening for employees and moving appropriate infusion treatments into patients' homes. Murphy argues that better access, lower costs and strong outcomes do not have to be competing goals.
