Welcome to Lesson 8 of our 20 Grammar Rules series!
In this lesson, we learn how to use collective nouns correctly with singular and plural verbs and pronouns.
A collective noun refers to a group of people, animals, or things, such as a team, family, committee, or company.
📚 In this lesson, you will learn:
✅ What collective nouns are
✅ How collective nouns work in British English (BrE)
✅ How collective nouns work in American English (AmE)
✅ When to use singular and plural verbs
✅ How to choose the correct pronouns
✅ How to avoid common grammar mistakes
Examples:
The team is playing well. — The team is viewed as one unit.
The team are arguing among themselves. — Common in British English when focusing on individual members.
The committee has made its decision. — The committee is viewed as one unit.
The members of the committee are sharing their ideas. — The individual members are emphasized.
📌 Grammar tip: In American English, collective nouns usually take singular verbs when the group acts as one unit. In British English, they can take singular or plural verbs depending on whether the group is viewed as one unit or as individual members.
