Would you stop for someone you hadn’t met yet? “Would You Stop?” - Aurora Sky (2014). This song began with a photograph of a road disappearing into the fog. I kept imagining what lay beyond it: Carolina Road, the window rolled down, someone up ahead who might give me a reason to stop. There was something about that image I couldn’t leave alone. I started wondering who was travelling, who was waiting, and whether either of them knew how close they were to meeting. Soon I was imagining the moment they noticed each other — and everything that might follow if one of them stayed. “I wanted to capture that feeling of almost knowing someone — before you’ve spoken, before anything has happened, when everything is still possible.” Writing it, I kept coming back to how much courage there is in a small decision. Slowing down. Looking back. Saying something when it would be easier to keep moving. You don’t know whether it will become a story you tell for years or a moment the other person forgets. Returning to this song, I remember that mixture of hope and hesitation. Wanting someone to notice you, while wondering what you would do if they did. Would you slow down? Would you turn around?
