We Had a Plan for Barbados… Then Life Happened

Before we left the UK, we thought we had our new life in Barbados all figured out. We had a plan. Downsize the house. Sell the house. Book one month in an Airbnb. Find a six-month rental. Get our long-term legal status. Build our little shack in Barbados. Start a business. Build a new life. Simple… right? Well, three months after arriving in Barbados, the plan looks very different. Our house didn't sell. In fact, we ended up paying both our mortgage and rent for months. A sale fell through. Plans had to change. And the reality of starting a completely new life in another country began to set in. But not everything went wrong. We successfully downsized, eventually rented out our UK home, found ourselves a longer-term place to live, and started thinking differently about how we're going to build our future here. The original plan was to have the shack built by a contractor. Now we're considering a completely different approach — building Phase 1 ourselves, building up our savings, and eventually taking on Phase 2 when the time is right. This isn't the story we thought we'd be telling when we left London. But perhaps that's the reality of moving abroad. Sometimes you don't get to follow the plan.
