A bell-shaped clay pot, four thousand years old, sits behind glass in a London museum - and for a century it was the most argued-over object in European prehistory. Textbooks said the people who made it were mostly the same Neolithic farmers who raised Stonehenge, just with new pottery and new customs. Then, in 2018, scientists sequenced DNA from thirty-seven skeletons buried with these pots across Britain, and the results did not match the textbooks at all. So what did the bones actually show, and why did it overturn everything archaeologists thought they knew?
In this video:
• How the Bell Beaker package of pots, daggers and wristguards spread across Europe from 2800 BC
• Why postwar archaeologists rejected migration and built a story of gradual cultural change
• The 2018 Nature paper that sequenced DNA from 155 British individuals and found near-total replacement
• Why isotope analysis, like the famous Amesbury Archer, missed the real scale of the change
• How Beaker newcomers reused Stonehenge and Avebury without having built them
• Where the barrows, bones and museum collections that revealed this story can still be seen today

• University of Copenhagen, 2015 study - identified steppe ancestry influx into Bronze Age Europe
• Nature Communications, 2021 paper - found Neolithic ancestry persisted disproportionately through women

Visiting: English Heritage maintains access to the round barrows on Salisbury Plain - look for the single round mound replacing the older communal long barrow, the shift in form that marks the transition the DNA confirmed.
