Ten places in New Mexico the outlaws used to control, from a ghost-town hotel in Shakespeare to a windmill on the Las Vegas plaza and an upstairs window in Lincoln.
In 1880, about 75 armed men marched three prisoners from the Las Vegas jail to a windmill on the plaza. The gang that ran the town had lost its marshal. Its leader was the justice of the peace, the coroner and the mayor all at once.
New Mexico's outlaws didn't always hide from the law. Sometimes they held it. This countdown starts at the bottom rung, in Shakespeare, where vigilantes hanged two men from the hotel rafters. It moves through Reserve, where 19-year-old Elfego Baca held off a crowd of cowboys behind a door that took 367 bullets, and the Twin Mountain crossing, where Black Jack Ketchum robbed his last train and met a gallows where the rope was too long.
Then it climbs, to the St. James Hotel in Cimarron with bullet holes still in the saloon ceiling, and to Santa Fe, where the Santa Fe Ring reached the governor's office until Washington sent an investigator. In East Las Vegas, Hoodoo Brown and the Dodge City Gang ran a railroad town from the bench.
Real names, real dates, and what stands at each place today. The trail ends at an upstairs window, and a shotgun turned on the man who owned it.
