Cool Crisp Air & Empty Maryland Trails Come along for another relaxing ride through Maryland neighborhoods, peaceful bike paths, wooded trails, quiet backroads, and, of course, another visit to the ever-unpredictable haunted golf course. No racing, no training plans, and no pressure to chase personal records. Just a bicycle, crisp fall air, quiet roads, empty trails, and one very carefully selected gear that appears to still have all of its teeth. One of my favorite parts of documenting the same roads and trails throughout the year is seeing just how dramatically they can change depending on the weather, season, and even the time of day. Today was one of those simple rides where everything lined up perfectly, cool temperatures, very little traffic, hardly any pedestrians, and plenty of room to just settle in and enjoy the route. The air had that unmistakable crisp fall feeling that makes these rides so much more comfortable than the humid summer months. The temperature stayed cool, the roads were calm, and the quieter trails made the whole afternoon feel unusually relaxed. After some of the packed rides we’ve had recently, having long stretches almost completely to myself was a welcome change. And then there’s the drivetrain. After all the skipping, grinding, complaining, and increasingly obvious signs that I should probably replace something, I’m happy to report that the chain did not skip once during the entire ride. Not once. Apparently the gear I found yesterday is the chosen one. So naturally, instead of taking this as an opportunity to finally schedule a drivetrain replacement, I’ve chosen to interpret it as proof that the current system is working perfectly. We found the good gear, we live here now. As long as I don’t disturb anything, ask too many questions, or accidentally shift back into one of the gears that has been ground into modern art, I see no reason this arrangement can’t continue indefinitely. This is maintenance through avoidance.
