THE CHIEF JOSEPH & BEARTOOTH HIGHWAY ROUTE Leaving Cody, Wyoming, I head deep into the mountains on Wyoming Highway 296 and begin the steep climb toward Dead Indian Summit. What follows is exactly the kind of riding I dreamed about when I first got into motorcycles: sweeping mountain roads, tight hairpins, massive valleys, and snow-covered peaks. The Chief Joseph Scenic Byway delivers incredible riding and some of the most dramatic mountain scenery of the entire expedition. Then the road connects with the legendary Beartooth Highway, where the landscape changes completely. Snow banks appear. Frozen lakes. Frost heaves. Brutal wind. And eventually, the Beartooth Pass Summit at 10,947 feet elevation. Coming from Las Vegas, riding through this winter landscape on my fully loaded 2025 BMW R 1300 GS is something I never imagined I'd experience.
