Riding my BMW R1300 GS across the legendary Beartooth Highway and Chief Joseph Scenic Byway on Day 5 of this solo motorcycle adventure travel series is an absolute bucket-list experience. This episode tracks my journey leaving Cody, Wyoming, as I climb over 10,947 feet into a freezing alpine wonderland, navigating brutal switchbacks, mountain passes, and stunning valleys on the way to Alaska. If you want to experience the ultimate American road trip, canyon carving on a fully loaded adventure motorcycle, and meeting incredible locals along the way - come ride with me!
🏍️ THE EXPEDITION ALASKA MISSION
This is Day 5 of Expedition Alaska - a solo, unfiltered 45-day, 9,225-mile motorcycle journey from Las Vegas to Alaska and back. If you're into adventure motorcycles, BMW GS motorcycles, long-distance motorcycle touring, scenic roads, mountain riding, motorcycle travel, and epic American road trips, you are in the right place. Somewhere along this ride, I realize just how much freedom this motorcycle has given me. This isn't just about reaching Alaska; it's about experiencing the road.
THE CHIEF JOSEPH & BEARTOOTH HIGHWAY ROUTE
Leaving Cody, Wyoming, I head deep into the mountains on Wyoming Highway 296 and begin the steep climb toward Dead Indian Summit. What follows is exactly the kind of riding I dreamed about when I first got into motorcycles: sweeping mountain roads, tight hairpins, massive valleys, and snow-covered peaks. The Chief Joseph Scenic Byway delivers incredible riding and some of the most dramatic mountain scenery of the entire expedition.
Then the road connects with the legendary Beartooth Highway, where the landscape changes completely. Snow banks appear. Frozen lakes. Frost heaves. Brutal wind. And eventually, the Beartooth Pass Summit at 10,947 feet elevation. Coming from Las Vegas, riding through this winter landscape on my fully loaded 2025 BMW R 1300 GS is something I never imagined I'd experience. Along the way, I meet fellow motorcyclists, collect some Beartooth Highway stickers, cross from Wyoming into Montana, make new friends at a local coffee shop, and share stories over coffee and cake.
