There is a beach on the Sinai Peninsula called Nuweiba, where the Gulf of Aqaba meets a long flat stretch of sand backed on three sides by steep mountain walls. Stand at the water's edge and look east toward Saudi Arabia. The gulf is about ten miles wide at that point. The water is clear and blue and looks, from the surface, like any other stretch of the Red Sea.
