The demo was released on Newgrounds in 2020. The game is developed by a small group consisting primarily of Cameron "ninjamuffin99" Taylor, David "PhantomArcade" Brown, Isaac "Kawai Sprite" Garcia, and evilsk8r. Friday Night Funkin' is also open-source.[a] The game revolves around the player character, Boyfriend, who must defeat a variety of opponents in singing and rapping contests in order to continue dating his love interest, Girlfriend. Gameplay involves hitting notes with timed inputs while avoiding running out of health for the duration of the song. There are currently ten levels, alongside selected songs featuring more difficult remixes. Friday Night Funkin' was initially created for the Ludum Dare 47 game jam on October 5, 2020.[‡ 8] An expanded demo was released on November 1, 2020, with updates continually released in the following months. On July 15, 2025, Friday Night Funkin' was released for iOS and Android. A full version backed by Kickstarter, titled Friday Night Funkin': The Full Ass Game, is in development TWIDDLEFINGER is a one-shot, Aethos-inspired mod created by Gibz under the alias of MAXPROLOVER988. It is based on the YouTube channel Max Design Pro, and by extension, the "gegagedigedagedago" meme. The mod has two endings, each determined by player input. On July 1, 2025, Gibz announced that the mod was meant to have received an anniversary update.[3][1] Said update would have included An Ode To A Friend, a gallery including a timeline of the mod's development, and a "beta" mix for TWIDDLEFINGER, featuring finished versions of the original scrapped sprites,[4] despite this, an anniversary update never released and it's unknown if much or if any content was made for it. However, It doesn't mean this mod won't be updated, Gibz has said the mod will receive an update in the far future with plans for it, just not now. On May 31, 2026, Gibz acknowledged the 2 year anniversary of the mod with a tweet saying "max will be seen again soon".[5] This heavily implies more official TWIDDLEFINGER content. Soon after, on Jun 16, 2026, Gibz changed the thumbnail for TWIDDLEFINGER.[6] He also unlisted 2 videos, those being "twiddlefingre SLOWED and reVERB" and "twiddlefinger slow reverb but orange".
