The Greenwood Chorale, directed by Paul Brown, opens "Sacred Echoes: Music from the French Romantic Period" with Gabriel Fauré's beloved "Cantique de Jean Racine," Op. 11. This exquisite work was composed in 1865, Fauré's final year as a student at the École Niedermeyer in Paris, and it earned him the school's first prize in composition. It remains one of his most popular and enduring works. The text, a French paraphrase of the Latin hymn "Consors paterni luminis" by the 17th-century dramatist Jean Racine, is a prayer for divine grace and salvation: "O Redeemer divine, Our sole source of salvation, Eternal Light of the earth and the sky, We kneel in adoration. O Savior, turn on us Thy loving eye!"
