Roots Reggae Classic: Empress Tafari – Psalms of the Empress (1983, Lost Album)

Unearthed from the sacred vaults of roots reggae history, Psalms of the Lioness is the long-shelved solo project of Empress Tafari — a spiritual warrior, poetess, and daughter of Rasta. Recorded in 1983 at a hidden compound in Spanish Town, this album was born in a time of political tension, silent protest, and divine meditation. Captured on a dusty 4-track tape machine with live Nyabinghi drummers, analog keyboards, and the hum of the Jamaican hills in the background, these 10 recordings pulse with ancestral presence. The sessions were lit by candlelight and laced with thick clouds of chalice smoke, as Tafari chanted verses of liberation, womanhood, and Zion through her raspy, unwavering voice. Each track is a spiritual offering — echoing the strength of the I-Threes and the fire of grassroots empresses who stood firm in a male-dominated roots scene. From the thunderous intro “Lioness Prayer” to the militant closer “Rise Up Daughters”, this is a lost roots gem crafted for those who still listen with soul. A true rootswoman and mystic chanter, her voice rose from the hills of August Town like a morning psalm — raw, unpolished, and powerful. While others chased fame, Tafari chose fire. Inspired by the teachings of Haile Selassie I and the grounding rhythms of Nyabinghi, she became a hidden gem in Jamaica’s underground roots scene, known for her rebel chants, meditative live sets, and healing livity. Her message was clear: Zion is real, and Babylon must fall. In 1983, after years of traveling between sound system yards and Rasta camps, Empress Tafari recorded her only known studio project: Psalms of the Lioness. The sessions were tracked on dusty analog reels with a live band deep in the hills of St. Thomas — layered with dub echoes, Nyabinghi drums, and the ancestral power of her voice. Shelved by producers who deemed it "too militant" and "too spiritual," the album vanished — whispered only among elders, collectors, and daughters of Zion who remembered the Lioness in her prime. Now unearthed after 40 years, Psalms of the Lioness stands as a holy relic of rebel womanhood — a testimony of fire, feminine strength, and pure Rasta livity. ⚠️ Disclaimer: All artists, music, and stories featured on this channel are entirely fictional and created using AI.
