Learn how to write stories that are spooky, not scary, and discover how to invite your audience into the dark without losing the wonder, warmth, and fun. From Coraline and Beetlejuice to Ghostbusters and ParaNorman, we're exploring four storytelling techniques that help writers create wonderfully strange worlds, guide audiences through them, and know just how far to push the fear. Along the way you will learn: 🎃 What makes spooky different in tone, promise and payoff 🏚️ How to build a world that feels lived in and a little haunted 🗺️ How to give your audience rules so fear feels like play 🕯️ How to write a guide who makes the dark feel safe to explore 🏠 How to land an ending that feels earned and warm 🧩 SPOOKY STORYCRAFT - WRITING QUICK REFERENCE 🔵 1. THE FAMILIAR DARK Make the strange familiar. Horror often makes the familiar strange or keeps the unfamiliar frightening. But spooky stories can bring us closer to the very things that should scare us. Give your monsters personalities, relationships, and lives beyond being frightening. For your writing: How can you change your audience's relationship with the strange or frightening elements of your story? 🔵 2. THE RULES OF THE DARK Give your world logic, boundaries, and vulnerabilities. Horror often keeps its rules hidden, hostile, or unreliable. But when audiences understand how a spooky world works, they can begin to explore and enjoy it. For your writing: What rules govern your dark world? Where does its power stop, and what can your characters actually do once they understand it? 🔵 3. THE SPIRIT GUIDE Give us a protagonist we want to follow into the dark. Consider three character traits: Capability, Curiosity, and Comfort. Combining at least two can make even frightening experiences more approachable. These traits can also develop throughout your character's journey. For your writing: What makes your protagonist someone audiences are willing to follow into frightening situations? Which traits do they possess, and how might those traits change? 🔵 4. THE WAY HOME Consider how your story resolves both the darkness and your protagonist's journey. Horror can leave us with ambiguity, terrible losses, or the darkness winning altogether. Spooky stories often give us a greater sense of resolution. Your ending doesn't have to be perfectly happy, but these two resolutions can make the entire experience feel more satisfying and approachable. For your writing: How is the darkness resolved, and how has your main character changed? What does your audience get to come home to? 🎭 IN THIS VIDEO We break down craft from Coraline, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Wednesday, Edward Scissorhands, ParaNorman, The Addams Family, Scooby-Doo, Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island, Ghostbusters, Monsters Inc., Hellboy, plus craft contrasts from Jaws, Alien, Frankenstein, The Blair Witch Project, The Conjuring and Hereditary. ⚠️ This video contains story details and clips from the films and shows discussed. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 0:00 - 🎃 Why Dark Can Feel Cozy 1:18 - ✍️ Spooky Storycraft 1:52 - 🏚️ The Familiar Dark 6:08 - 🗺️ The Rules Of The Dark 9:57 - 🕯️ The Spirit Guide 14:30 - 🏠 The Way Home 17:39 - 💌 Why We Keep Coming Back To The Dark 🎥 WELCOME TO PLOT LUCK Well, all right, plot heads, let's get into it.
