Harriet Tubman escaped slavery. Then she went back. And back. And back again.
Born Araminta Ross on Maryland's Eastern Shore, Harriet Tubman would become one of the most extraordinary figures in American history—not only as a conductor on the Underground Railroad, but as a Civil War nurse, scout and spy, a community leader, and an advocate for women's suffrage.
In this episode of Women Who Sat At The Table, we look beyond the legend to the woman herself: the family she refused to leave behind, the people she helped lead to freedom, her role in the Combahee River Raid, and the work she continued long after the Civil War ended.
Harriet Tubman never waited for someone to pull out a chair for her. She learned the route, found her people, and made sure they could get there too.
I’m Alexis, and this is Women Who Sat At The Table.
