This video documents my first-ever experience with the new to me SunDolphin Journey 10 SS kayak on the Chipola River near Yancey Bridge in Marianna, FL — and let’s just say… it was a disaster. The strong current violently spun the boat, making paddling nearly impossible. After I got back to the boat ramp, I loaded her up and went back to the calm waters of the Mill Pond for a better test run with the dogs, Levi and Layla. After I drained the water from the drain plugs, we paddled out to the open water. To say the least, it's not very dog friendly. It is, however, a good set up for the solo fisherman. A full-on waterborne struggle. The current was so strong it kept flipping the boat sideways, and paddling felt like fighting a tide. In this raw, unfiltered recap, I break down exactly what happened during the trip, why the kayak didn’t perform as expected, and how you can avoid similar headaches when choosing your next river runner. I tried the SunDolphin kayak on the Chipola River — and it was a total mismatch. From the moment I hit the water, the current had me spinning like a top, and I barely made 100 feet before calling it quits. No exaggeration: this wasn’t a fun challenge — it was an education in what not to do when picking a kayak for rivers. In this video, I’ll show you the footage, explain why the design failed me here, and give you clear red flags to watch for before you buy.
