Everyone knows the deadliest seat in a B-17 was the ball turret, a glass ball under the belly. In 1944, a survey of the Eighth Air Force counted casualties seat by seat, and that ball came out safest. This film tells the whole story of the men who flew those seats, then returns to that survey and shows what it missed. 0:00 The safest seat in the bomber 0:16 Ira Eaker's bet and the first raid 2:21 Inside the B-17 and the tour of twenty-five 4:50 Schweinfurt and Regensburg 5:57 Black Thursday 7:23 The P-51 Mustang and Doolittle's order 8:34 Big Week and Berlin 10:37 Oil, D-Day and Saint-Lô 11:57 The count: who really died where 14:22 Chowhound and the bill Sources: Donald L.
