Luckily for you, they recognise you as a valuable ally empathetic to their cause. Which you are, of course, are you not? It would be silly to say no, with armed men on both sides of your little carriage. This audio would have been a lot more bland without the VAs who kindly lent me their voices. Find the rest of the series and the background for this story arch here:    • Knightly Princess series   The period we’re living through here is the 1381 Peasants’ Revolt. Stay for the outro to hear a quick outline of it! We’ll be living through this part of history for a bit more, since it’s one of my favourite historical events. It brings me peace to know that people have been fighting for their rights for centuries, and though the battle is long, bit by bit we’re winning more rights and freedoms. The real historical character wasn’t Irish, but I figured I’d add an accent for easier identification since I’d have to break history by genderbending the figure anyway. “Yer wan” i.e. “your one” refers to a woman close to the listener or relevant to the conversation; in this case, always the Princess. “Craic” is banter / messing with you. “Cailín” is girl. “Go n-éirí an bóthar leat” means “May your journey be successful”, often mistranslated as “May the road rise to meet you.” “Slán” is bye. The “true” commons of England refers to them being true, i.e. loyal, to the Queen. The rebels’ slogan was “With King Richard and the true commons of England.” Seeing as we’re bending history a bit and King Richard doesn’t yet exist on our timeline, our rebels are against the current tyrannical queen, our Knightly Princess's mother. The Black Death has also not yet occurred in our story, though it played heavily into the Peasants’ Revolt. The plague had killed a significant portion of the population, but wages had been forcibly stagnated to pre-plague levels to protect noble landlords’ income. This meant the surviving peasants had to do more work for the same pay. Combined with high taxation due to the ongoing war with France, the peasants were economically tight. This gave them the final push to call for an end to the existing world order. Sounds somewhat similar to our times. In the outro, I refer the Joan of Kent as "the Queen", but that would not have been her correct title, as her husband never was king, having died before his father. In his chronicles, Froissart refers to her as the Princess of Wales. She was the mother of the reigning king, Richard II. Horse-drawn carriages were also extremely rare in the medieval period, but they did exist, and the English court would have had one. Whether you’d be allowed to borrow it is another matter. They would also have been barrel-shaped and entered and exited from the rear with the seats on the sides, but then the scene would be annoyingly panned, so I gave you a historically inappropriate Victorian coach instead.
