Filmed at Joyland in Great Yarmouth on September 24th 2012. One of my personal childhood favourites! Made by Glass Fibre Products of Lowestoft, I believe Sarah the Seahorse dates from the late 1980s. I have never seen another like this so it's hard to say much about her history for sure. Glass Fibre Products made a curious mix of their own designs as well as reusing other companies' (both British and continental European for sure). Sometimes they would even alter the designs slightly (as seen with "Captain Cod", Diamond Electronics' Flipper with a sailor's hat and pipe added!) To make things more confusing, Glass Fibre Products also did a lot of restoration work, often putting old toys on their own bases and giving them complete new looks, so it's impossible to really say where Sarah's design originated unless I can find another example or other proof. Her paintwork is exactly as it would have been when she left the Glass Fibre factory, but I can't recall if she played any kind of music or not...the poor thing was mute at the time of filming! I am currently working on a website about the history of coin operated rides, particularly those made (or at least commonly distributed) in the UK during the 1950s-90s. Please visit http://www.coinoperatedrides.weebly.com! If anybody has old photos/video footage that they wouldn't mind sharing with me, please e-mail me at coinoperatedrides@hotmail.com or leave a comment below. I would be eternally grateful. Thank you! :)
