Finesse can be everything when targeting Wisconsin ice crappies over deep basins come midwinter.—especially when fish are pressured and suspended. In this video, we fish with Caleb Wistad, dialing in an ultra-subtle approach using tiny tungsten jigs paired with Maki Jamie soft plastics.
These crappies were roaming basins and found a gigantic school holding tight to a submerged tree off the bottom. The WI DNR plants many trees and cribs into lakes to provide fish habitat.
This finesse ice fishing setup focuses on:
• Micro tungsten jigs for precise, controlled movements
• Soft plastics that breathe with minimal rod motion
• Subtle lifts, pauses, and quivers to trigger neutral crappies
• Locating suspended fish relating to isolated basin cover
If you’re struggling to get bites on Wisconsin panfish through the ice, this finesse crappie pattern is a go-to approach for mid-winter basin fish.
