The Konark Sun Temple is one of Odisha's greatest architectural masterpieces, but what we see today may be only a fraction of the magnificent temple that once stood here. The original temple is believed to have been around 227 feet (69 metres) tall — taller than the present-day Puri Jagannath Temple.
But what happened to the rest of Konark Temple?
In this video, we explore the fascinating and mysterious history of the Konark Sun Temple — from the attack of Kalapahada in 1568 to the theories surrounding its destruction, the legendary magnetic stone story, environmental damage and the possibility of tectonic activity.
We also look at how the British restored the monument, why the Jagamohan was filled with sand and sealed more than a century ago, and how several beautiful sculptures and architectural pieces were taken away during the colonial period.
And now, something historic is happening.
The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) began an excavation operation in April 2026 to remove the sand from inside the Jagamohan. Could this finally allow people to see what has been hidden inside Konark's Jagamohan for around 120 years?
In this video, you will discover:
• What the FULL Konark Temple may have looked like
• How tall the original Konark Sun Temple was
• Why the Aruna Stambha is now in front of Puri Jagannath Temple
• The truth behind the famous Konark magnetic stone legend
• What happened during Kalapahada's attack
• The Dharmapada curse theory
• The Portuguese sailor and lodestone theory
• How environmental erosion may have damaged Konark
• The theory of tectonic activity and earthquakes
• How the British restored the Konark Temple
• Why the Jagamohan was filled with sand
• What happened to Konark's sculptures during British rule
• The famous Surya sculpture now in the British Museum
• Why the Jagamohan was sealed
• What the ongoing ASI excavation could reveal
Konark is not just a monument. It is a remarkable chapter of Odisha's history, architecture and cultural heritage.
Watch till the end to discover the story of the Konark Sun Temple and what may still be hidden inside it.
