Losing muscle after 60? 5 research-backed foods to keep your muscles: eggs, beans and lentils, Greek yogurt, salmon and lean red meat. Plus why eating more protein may not be working, and the one thing that makes all of them work better. CHAPTERS 0:00 Why "more protein" may not be working 0:19 #1 Eggs, and why breakfast matters 3:11 #2 Beans and lentils 5:10 #3 Greek yogurt before bed 6:59 #4 Salmon and other oily fish 8:58 #5 Lean red meat + strength exercise 11:19 What a day of eating could look like 12:08 Recap: 5 foods for keeping muscle after 60 WHAT THE RESEARCH SHOWED Older muscles need more: older men needed about two thirds more protein per kg of body weight to get the same muscle-building response as younger men Breakfast: aim for about 25–30 g of protein in that first meal Daily target: experts suggest about 1–1.2 g of protein per kg of body weight per day for healthy adults over 65 Before bed: 40 g of casein protein raised overnight muscle building in 48 older men Fish oil: about 3.5% more thigh muscle in 6 months in adults aged 60–85 (high-dose capsules) Protein plus exercise: women aged 60–90 who added lean red meat to strength training gained about 18% more leg strength A FULL DAY OF PROTEIN Breakfast: 3 eggs scrambled with spinach, whole-grain toast and a glass of milk (about 30 g) Lunch: lentil soup with cheese on bread, or a salad with canned salmon and chickpeas (about 25–30 g) Dinner: a palm-sized portion of fish, chicken or lean beef with vegetables (about 25–30 g) Evening: plain Greek yogurt or cottage cheese with berries (about 15–20 g) QUICK STRENGTH CHECK Sit in a sturdy chair, arms folded. Time 5 stand-ups. Taking longer than 15 seconds may be a sign of low leg strength, so mention it to your doctor. Only try this if you can stand safely, with someone nearby the first time. ⚠️ WHO SHOULD BE CAREFUL If you have kidney disease, check your protein target with your doctor before eating more protein. Don't start high-dose fish oil without asking your doctor, especially if you take a blood thinner. If you have heart disease, joint problems, poor balance or a recent fall or surgery, ask your doctor or physiotherapist which exercises are safe. If your doctor has told you to limit eggs or cholesterol, follow their advice. STUDIES MENTIONED 1. Moore DR et al.
