At 22,621 feet below the Philippine Sea lies the deepest shipwreck ever found, and it isn't the Titanic. It's the USS Samuel B. Roberts, a tiny destroyer escort the crew called the Sammy B, built to hunt submarines, not to fight battleships.
In this documentary, we go back to October 1944 and the Battle off Samar, when a handful of small American ships known as Taffy 3 turned toward the most powerful Japanese fleet left in the Pacific, including the giant battleship Yamato. We follow the USS Johnston and Commander Ernest Evans, the Sammy B and Lieutenant Commander Robert Copeland, and the young gun crew of Gun 52. Then we dive with Victor Vescovo and the Limiting Factor, first to find the Johnston in 2021, and then the Samuel B. Roberts in 2022, the wreck that broke the world depth record.
Why is the deepest shipwreck ever found a forgotten warship, and why do so few people know its name?
