NOAA has an El Niño Advisory in effect, and its Climate Prediction Center puts the chance of a strong-to-very strong El Niño through early 2027 at better than 83%. It could become the strongest since records began in 1950. But what does that actually mean for California? This is the first video on How California Works: an animated explainer on how El Niño works, why the odds tilt wetter in Southern California than in the north, what happened in 1982–83, 1997–98 and the 2015–16 "Godzilla" winter, and what atmospheric rivers, landslides, the snowpack, the coast and the State Water Project have to do with it. El Niño shifts the odds. It doesn't guarantee storms. Forecast figures in this video are as of October 2026 (NOAA CPC discussion Oct 8, weekly update Oct 19, seasonal outlook Oct 15). NOAA's next ENSO update is Nov 12, 2026. For forecasts and warnings, follow your local National Weather Service office: https://www.weather.gov/ NEXT ON HOW CALIFORNIA WORKS: we follow the California Aqueduct over the Tehachapi Mountains, where the state lifts water nearly 2,000 feet to reach Southern California.
