The lanterns are lit in the linden tree, the village has gathered in the square, and the Lantern Road Troupe takes the stage. Twenty-two original bard songs, sung by Rowan and Elowen with lute, fiddle, flute, frame drum and hurdy-gurdy: knights who keep their oaths, a stranger's bargain at midwinter, mages and their towers, a thread through a maze, the beast in the labyrinth, a dragon on its gold, the Wild Hunt, a king asleep under the hill, and a lullaby for a lost kingdom. From Rowan's journal: Songs of the Lantern Road Since the rain at the mill we have been three on the road, and Elowen says a troupe that only hums is half a troupe. So tonight, in a village whose name I never learned, we sang. They hung lanterns in the old linden for us and pushed the benches back from the well. I sang the knight at the ford and the stranger with the axe; Elowen sang the thread in the maze and made the children hide from the Hunt; together we went down to the Black Mere and back again. Lumen sat above us the whole night like a lamp that had decided to listen. When we finished, nobody went home for a long while. Stay a while.
