It's 8:52 on a Tuesday morning and you're still sitting in the parking lot. Your relationship ended two days ago, you've done everything right since, and two thoughts keep running at once: you're handling this, and a stronger person wouldn't still feel like this. This film takes apart the idea that resilience means not breaking. It follows the research behind it: Emmy Werner's forty-year study of 698 children on Kauai, Ann Masten's "ordinary magic", George Bonanno's work on how people actually move through loss, and Seligman and Maier's turnaround on learned helplessness. Along the way it builds one picture, a sailing boat and its keel. The tall mast is what everyone sees. The weight below the surface is what brings you back up. The film then covers the four traps that keep capable people stuck, and three practices that build the real thing, none of which involve toughening up. It ends with Marcus Aurelius and a question for you: which trap shows up first when the wave hits?
