Quick Facts about LRT-1: The LRT-1, the Philippines’ first light rail system and Southeast Asia’s pioneer rapid transit, was conceived in the late 1970s. On July 12, 1980, President Ferdinand Marcos created the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA). Construction began in September/October 1981. The first section from Baclaran to Central Terminal opened on December 1, 1984, with the full line to Monumento completed in May 1985. It was originally operated by the LRTA, later privatized under Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC) in 2015. For over 40 years, it has served as Metro Manila’s vital transport backbone.
