Africa is breaking apart. Beneath East Africa, the continental crust is stretching, thinning and fracturing — part of a geological process that could eventually create a new ocean. In 2005, a roughly 60-kilometre section of the Afar Rift ruptured during an extraordinary episode of magma intrusion. Parts of the rift opened by as much as eight metres in a matter of days. Then, in 2026, new high-resolution seismic research from the Turkana Rift revealed something remarkable: continental crust beneath the rift has thinned to around 13 kilometres in places, providing evidence that this part of East Africa is undergoing active crustal necking. But Africa is not about to split apart tomorrow. The East African Rift is a vast tectonic system stretching thousands of kilometres across the continent, and continental breakup unfolds over millions of years. In this Deep Time Files documentary, we follow the evidence beneath Ethiopia, Kenya and the Afar region to understand how continents are pulled apart, why magma rises into the fractures, what earthquakes and volcanoes reveal about the process — and how a continental rift can eventually become an entirely new ocean basin.
