Jewel 1996: The Lost Interview Days Before She Became a Star | Dini Petty

Jewel on The Dini Petty Show, May 14, 1996. Who Will Save Your Soul went to US radio on April 23, 1996, just 21 days before this aired, and hit stores as a single the same day as this broadcast. Pieces of You has been out for over a year and is still a slow burn. It would go on to peak at No. 4 and sell 12 million copies in the US. This is Jewel at 21, before the fame, in an interview not seen since it first aired. She grew up on an Alaska homestead with no TV and no shower, and says the silence is where she found out who she was going to become. She was yodeling in hotel dinner shows at six. She can't read music. She sees her songs as shapes. Three years after picking up a guitar, she says she has played more than 800 shows in a single year to get here. Then she yodels, live in the studio.
