The meeting had been called after Mamata Banerjee spoke to Rahul Gandhi and CPI(M) general secretary M. A. Baby, and it was expected to settle the opposition's strategy on a removal motion against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The motion was not formally taken up. Instead, the INDIA bloc agreed to a proposal from independent Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal to jointly challenge in the Supreme Court the 2023 law on appointing election commissioners, which gives them immunity.
