1 a.m. on a rooftop by the sea, no Moon, the southern sky full of stars. Then every star starts moving closer to us. All of them at once, and they don't stop. Sirius outshines Venus, starlight casts shadows, the sky turns blue in the middle of the night, Alpha Centauri crosses the Solar System and becomes a second Sun.
The rule: every star's distance is divided by the same number. Half the distance means four times the light. The panel shows how many times closer the stars are, how much brighter starlight is, how far away Alpha Centauri (the nearest star) is, and how wide it looks in the sky.
WHAT IS REAL
Alpha Centauri is 4.37 light-years away; Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, is 8.6 light-years away.
At 4.3 times closer, Sirius would be as bright as Venus. At 10 times closer it would be brighter than Venus ever gets, bright enough to see in daylight.
At about 30 times closer, all the starlight together is about as bright as a full Moon.
At 100 times closer, Alpha Centauri shines like a half Moon; at about 300 times, like a full Moon, but as a single point.
At 1,625 times closer, Alpha Centauri is as far away as Voyager 1, our farthest spacecraft (about 170 AU).
At 7,000 times closer it is about as far as Pluto (about 40 AU), and the night sky is as bright as a cloudy day.
At 53,000 times closer it is inside Jupiter's orbit (5.2 AU).
At 276,000 times closer, Alpha Centauri is a second Sun, twice as bright as ours. At 544,000 times closer, Sirius gives about 25 times the Sun's light.
Star positions are for 1 a.m. at 34° south latitude.
WHAT IS NOT REAL OR NOT KNOWN
Stars can't move like this. All distances shrink by the same factor; in reality stars move independently and very slowly. Alpha Centauri is a pair of stars (plus Proxima); we ignore how far apart they are. The sky brightness, weather and effects on Earth are simplified, and a star passing this close would wreck the planets' orbits long before the end. The city and its people are made up.
