Build a complete microservices architecture with Kotlin and Ktor.
In this course, we’ll go from the fundamentals of microservices to a production-style system built with Ktor — covering service communication with REST and gRPC, event-driven architecture with Kafka, database per service, API Gateway, service discovery, authentication, resilience patterns, and API versioning.
Every topic is split into two parts: a clear theoretical explanation first, then a hands-on implementation in code, so you understand not just how to build it, but why it’s designed that way.
What You’ll Learn
Understand what microservices are and when to use them
Design and structure microservices with Ktor
Build service-to-service communication with REST
Implement high-performance communication with gRPC
Understand event-driven architecture
Produce and consume events with Kafka
Apply the Database per Service pattern
Build and configure an API Gateway
Implement service discovery
Understand authentication and security in microservices
Secure services with JWT authentication
Build resilient services with retries, timeouts, and circuit breakers
Version your APIs without breaking clients
Build a structured, scalable, and maintainable microservices system
Prerequisites
Before starting this course, you should have a basic understanding of:
Kotlin
Ktor fundamentals
REST APIs and HTTP
SQL and relational databases
Docker
Docker is an important prerequisite, as we use it to run our databases, message broker, and supporting infrastructure.
If you’re new to Ktor, I recommend starting with my previous course first: Ktor Backend Project — From Zero to Hero.
You do not need previous experience with microservices, gRPC, Kafka, or service discovery. These topics are explained throughout the course before we implement them.
Recommended Tools
IntelliJ IDEA
IntelliJ IDEA is the recommended IDE for following along with the course.

Who Is This Course For?
This course is designed for developers who want to learn how to build real microservices with Kotlin and Ktor, while developing a strong understanding of the architecture and patterns behind modern distributed systems.
Rather than simply writing code, we first explore the underlying concepts and then apply them through practical implementation.
Throughout the course, you’ll work with Ktor, REST, gRPC, Kafka, Docker, API Gateway, service discovery, JWT authentication, resilience patterns, and API versioning.
If you found the course useful, consider liking the video, subscribing to the channel, and sharing your thoughts or feedback in the comments.
