Śrīmad Bhāgavatam As It Is | Canto 2 Chapter 1 | Day 20 | Śrīmān Madhava Gopinatha Prabhu
In this Day 20 class on Śrīmad Bhāgavatam As It Is, Canto 2, Chapter 1, Śrīmān Madhava Gopinatha Prabhu explains the chapter titled “The First Step in God Realization.” This chapter begins Śukadeva Gosvāmī’s direct answer to Mahārāja Parīkṣit’s most important question: what should one hear, chant, remember and worship, especially when death is near?
Śukadeva Gosvāmī first glorifies Mahārāja Parīkṣit’s inquiry, declaring it beneficial for all kinds of people and approved by all transcendentalists. He explains that ordinary materialistic people have countless topics for hearing, but because they are blind to the ultimate truth, they waste their valuable human life in sleeping, sense enjoyment, earning money, and maintaining family attachments.
The chapter teaches that one who desires freedom from all miseries must hear about, glorify, and remember the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is the Supersoul, controller, and savior from all suffering. The perfection of human life—whether achieved through knowledge, mystic yoga, or prescribed duties—is to remember the Personality of Godhead at the end of life.
Śukadeva Gosvāmī then explains the special glory of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. Although he himself was already situated in transcendence, he became attracted to the Lord’s pastimes described in this spotless literature. He assures Mahārāja Parīkṣit that attentive and respectful hearing of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam gives firm faith in the Supreme Lord.
The chapter strongly emphasizes the holy name of the Lord. Constant chanting of the Lord’s name, following the great authorities, is described as the fearless and doubtless path of success for everyone—those free from material desires, those seeking material enjoyment, and even those who are self-satisfied in transcendental knowledge.
Śukadeva Gosvāmī reminds Parīkṣit that long life has no value if wasted without spiritual awareness. Even one moment of full consciousness is better than many years spent without inquiry into the supreme goal. He gives the example of King Khaṭvāṅga, who attained perfection by immediately taking shelter of the Supreme Lord when he learned that only a moment of life remained.
Since Mahārāja Parīkṣit had only seven days to live, Śukadeva instructs him to become fearless, cut off attachment to the body and related possessions, leave worldly dependence, control the mind and senses, and fix the consciousness on the Lord. He explains the process of meditation beginning with sacred sound, regulated breathing, withdrawal of the senses, and remembrance of the limbs of Lord Viṣṇu.
Mahārāja Parīkṣit then asks how and where the mind should be fixed so that the impurities within the heart may be removed. Śukadeva Gosvāmī replies by describing meditation on the virāṭ-rūpa, the universal form of the Lord, as the first step for those who need a gross conception of the Supreme.
The chapter presents the cosmic body of the Lord: the lower planetary systems as His feet and legs, outer space as His navel, the luminary planets as His chest, higher planetary systems as His neck, mouth, forehead and head, the demigods as His arms, the directions as His ears, the sun as His eye, day and night as His eyelids, rivers as His veins, trees as His bodily hairs, air as His breath, mountains as His bones, the moon as His mind, and all human and celestial beings as parts of His universal arrangement.
Through this vision, the seeker learns to see the entire material creation in relation to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Śukadeva Gosvāmī concludes that one who seriously desires liberation should concentrate the mind upon the Lord, because He alone is the all-blissful Absolute Truth and the ultimate shelter. Without fixing the mind on Him, one becomes misled and causes one’s own degradation.
This chapter beautifully establishes the foundation of spiritual life: hear about Kṛṣṇa, chant His holy name, remember Him at the time of death, control the mind and senses, and gradually rise from the universal conception to personal realization of the Supreme Lord.
