My mom’s “new to her” 2015 Jeep Compass Sport 2.4L 4x4 was sputtering, bucking, and hesitating—almost like the engine was cutting in and out. We were convinced it was the CVT transmission going bad. No misfire codes, no check engine light… just rough driving.
After some research, we found others suggesting spark plugs might be the issue—and they were right! A simple spark plug replacement completely solved the problem. It was an easy fix that took under 20 minutes using just a T30 Torx and a 5/8” spark plug socket.
We used Champion 318 copper spark plugs (only $2.99 each!) and gapped them slightly tighter at .040” instead of the factory .044” to help prevent future bucking as they wear.
This fix likely applies to other 2.4L Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, and Fiat engines with similar symptoms. If your CVT Jeep is hesitating or bucking, try this before assuming the transmission is shot!
