Writer, director, producer, and creative strategist Ryan Cunningham joins 100 Stories for a conversation about ADHD, identity, comedy, representation, creativity, and how the meaning of our lives can change even when the facts do not.
Ryan describes receiving an ADHD diagnosis as a profound reframing of her own story.
Nothing about her past changed.
But experiences she had interpreted as personal failures suddenly had context. And that new context changed her relationship with herself. She became kinder, more understanding, and more able to work with the way her mind actually works.
We talk about meditation and reactivity, why directing feels like the place Ryan is most herself, and how comedy can create empathy by revealing something recognizable about human behavior.
Ryan also talks about representation and the power of seeing a life like yours on screen. Sometimes seeing someone else inhabit a possibility makes that possibility available to you too.
Then we get into Narrative Intelligence.
Ryan describes it as the ability to distinguish between what happened and the story we constructed about what happened.
She also offers language I want to keep: a strong story has to be able to hold complexity.
And then she adds another challenge:
Sometimes Narrative Intelligence may involve knowing when something does not need to become a story at all.
The question I’m leaving with:
What in your past might mean something different if you had more context now?
