Long before Egypt built a single pyramid, people on the banks of the Danube were already building towns, carving stone faces and smelting metal. Most people think of Serbia as a place of recent history: wars, borders, headlines. They have no idea what lies underneath. In the gorge of the Iron Gates sits Lepenski Vir, a settlement thousands of years older than Giza, with strange fish-like sculptures nobody fully understands. Near Belgrade, the Vinča culture left behind mysterious symbols and some of the earliest evidence of copper smelting in the world. In this video, we uncover the lost world beneath Serbia: from the riverside village that had to be moved to escape a dam, to the symbols some call the first attempt at writing, and the geographic reason this corner of Europe became a cradle of civilization long before the pyramids rose.
