My Parachute Failed at 12,000 Feet — And I Had No Idea

My main parachute failed on my first ever skydive. I didn't find out until I was standing back on the ground. March 2023, Charlotte, North Carolina. I'd been in the US for seven months, doing my master's. My friend and I decided to go skydiving. I googled how dangerous it was, found a number that made me feel fine about it, and went. What I didn't know: the number I looked up was the chance of dying. I never looked up how often the main parachute actually fails — or that every rig carries a second one packed for exactly that reason.
