PTE Repeat Sentence Tips for People With a Weak Memory
1. Remember chunks, not individual words
Break the sentence into 2–4 meaningful phrases. For example:
The new policy / will take effect / at the beginning of next year.
Chunks are easier to retain than a long string of separate words.
2. Understand the meaning first
Do not treat the sentence like random sounds. Quickly identify: Who? Did what? What is the key message? Meaning gives your memory a structure.
3. Catch the sentence skeleton
Prioritise the core structure: subject + verb + key information.
For example:
Researchers have discovered / a new method / for reducing waste.
4. Use mental echoing
While listening, silently repeat each phrase in your head immediately after hearing it. Do not wait until the entire sentence finishes before trying to remember.
5. Visualise the message
Turn the sentence into a quick mental image.
Students gathered outside the library → imagine students standing near a library.
This can make abstract sound sequences easier to retrieve.
6. Copy the speaker’s rhythm
Remember the sentence as a sound pattern, not only as words. Pay attention to pauses, stressed words, and rhythm. This can help trigger the next phrase.
7. Do not sacrifice the whole answer for one forgotten word
When one word disappears from memory, avoid freezing. Continue with the parts you remember as accurately and fluently as possible. Repeat Sentence uses partial-credit scoring.
8. Do not write the full sentence
Trying to take detailed notes can divide your attention between listening and writing. Pearson’s own guidance recommends keeping the sentence in your head for this task.
9. Train memory progressively
Start with short sentences, then increase length:
5–6 words
7–9 words
10–12 words
longer complex sentences
10. Practise “listen once, repeat once”
Do not replay every practice sentence five times. The real skill is one-time encoding and immediate recall, so your practice should increasingly simulate that constraint.
