Muckross Abbey to Muckross House.

A bicycle trip through Killarney National Park, stopping to visit both Muckross Abbey and Muckross House. I entered the Muckross estate at the eastern gate near the Lake Hotel and finished the cycle overlooking Muckross lake. Note the size of the fireplace on the upper floor of the abbey and also the low height of the stone doorways and archways - people were shorter in those days. The abbey was founded in the fourteenth century and has a magnificent yew tree in the centre of the cloister which may be older than the abbey itself. Muckross house is a Tudor-style mansion that was built in the 1840's by the Scottish architect William Burn. The house is situated close to Muckross lake and is only a ten minute walk from the abbey.
