When an iron nail is placed in a blue copper sulphate solution, a single displacement reaction occurs because iron is more reactive than copper.
Chemical Equation:
Fe(s)+CuSO4 (aq)----- FeSO4(aq)+Cu (s)
Iron (Fe) displaces copper (Cu) from copper sulphate (CuSO4) to form iron(II) sulphate (FeSO4) and solid copper.
Key Observations nail color change: The grey iron nail gets a reddish-brown coating of metallic copper.
Solution color change: The solution turns from blue to light green due to the creation of ferrous sulphate (FeSO4).
Why It Happens reactivity: Iron sits higher than copper on the metal reactivity series, meaning it loses electrons more easily.
Electron transfer: Iron undergoes oxidation to form (Fe^2+) ions in the liquid, while (Cu^2+) ions undergo reduction to form solid copper on the nail.
