Why did Nichiren forbid visualization during chanting? Nichiren forbade visualization because the Gohonzon he inscribed is already the externalized Buddha nature of the practitioner, there is nothing separate left to picture, and attempting to visualize it rebuilds the very distance the practice exists to close.
