Yuki-onna: Japan's Snow Woman

On a freezing night in old Japan, a young woodcutter wakes in a ferryman's hut. The door is open, and a woman all in white is breathing on his sleeping friend. She spares the boy, on one condition: he must never tell anyone. This is Yuki-onna, the Snow Woman of Japan, in the famous telling written down by Lafcadio Hearn in Kwaidan (1904), as a farmer told it to him. Plus the real part: the legend is far older than Hearn's book, every snowy region tells it differently, and there is a reason why people feared her.
