Before refinancing your Connecticut home, call us at 203-693-8055 or visit https://closingct.com/
If someone else owns your home with you, refinancing the loan does not automatically remove that person from the deed. And signing over an ownership interest does not, by itself, remove someone’s responsibility for an existing loan.
In this video, Connecticut real estate attorney Kishore Kapoor shares three stories: a daughter refinancing to take her mother off the deed and loan, a homeowner buying out his former spouse, and a couple refinancing after marriage to add a spouse to the property and loan.
📋 WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
✔️ Why a refinance and a change in ownership are separate steps
✔️ How the deed, mortgage, and loan obligation serve different purposes
✔️ Why a co-owner must sign the documents needed to transfer their interest
✔️ What can happen if someone gives up ownership while remaining responsible for a loan
✔️ Why the timing of a deed transfer and refinance matters
✔️ How adding a spouse to the deed differs from adding them to a loan
✔️ Why you should review the documents with your closing attorney before signing
Whether you’re removing a co-owner after a divorce, taking a parent off title, or adding a spouse, tell your closing attorney what you want the ownership and loan arrangements to look like after closing. Both need to be addressed.
