Marlin Briscoe: The Black QB Who Made NFL History, Then Lost His Job

Marlin Briscoe: The Black QB Who Made NFL History, Then Lost His Job Marlin Briscoe made NFL history with the Denver Broncos in 1968, becoming the first Black starting quarterback in modern professional football. He threw 14 touchdown passes as a rookie, yet Denver did not give him another genuine opportunity to compete for the quarterback job. Briscoe rebuilt his career as a Pro Bowl wide receiver with the Buffalo Bills and later won two Super Bowls with the Miami Dolphins, including the team's legendary undefeated 1972 season. But his remarkable NFL career was followed by devastating personal struggles. After retiring, Briscoe battled cocaine addiction, lost his financial security, became homeless, and watched Doug Williams make Super Bowl history from a San Diego jail in 1988. This NFL documentary explores Marlin Briscoe's historic breakthrough, the Denver Broncos' quarterback controversy, his achievements with Buffalo and Miami, and his eventual recovery and commitment to helping young people. His story raises a difficult question about talent, opportunity, racial barriers and the true cost of being a pioneer in professional football.
