The First Annual Drukpa Council
After Buddha Shakymuni's parinirvana - his passing away from this world - countless schools of Buddhism flowered. Among them is the 800-year-old Drukpa Lineage (or Dragon Order) with a continuous lineage of masters who have been mindfully postponing their own passage to Nirvana by being reincarnated again - in order to help others and compassion and wisdom.
The reincarnations of these masters are spread throughout Bhutan, Sikkim, Tibet, Ladakh, Lahaul, Kinnaur and Nepal as well as other parts of the world. The First Annual Drukpa Council (ADC), the world's largest assembly of enlightened masters of the Drukpa Lineage, gathered more than 60 great masters and 10,000 participants.
Teachings of the Drukpa Lineage, especially the ancient oral transmissions in these far-flung Himalayan regions, have been disappearing under the threats of modernization and a lack of communication. At this council, the vast heritage of spiritual knowledge was shared with all present.
This congregation of the enlightened ones also witnessed the enthronement of two precious Drukpa masters: the Ninth Kyabgon Drukpa Yongzin Rinpoche; and the long-awaited reincarnation of Gyalwa Lorepa, who has been absent for more than 700 years since his first incarnation.
This series will bring back great memories of the First Annual Drukpa Council where so many of the Drukpa Lineage masters and their followers came together, to receive teachings and empowerments, to view 5 of the most precious relics in the world and to practice together with only one wish in mind - to be enlightened for the benefit of all beings.
