2006 Worlds Men’s SP (Eurosport) – Calgary | Stéphane Lambiel Leads Oda & Joubert

Summary: The men’s short program at the 2006 World Championships in Calgary reshuffled a close contest established during the qualifying round, whose scores still counted toward the championship standings. This highlights broadcast opens with Matthew Savoie (USA), whose elegant Adagio for Strings was compromised when the second jump of his combination became a double. Chengjiang Li (李成江, CHN) delivered strong technical content, including a quad toe–triple toe and triple Axel, while Emanuel Sandhu (CAN) also landed the quad-triple and triple Axel before falling on his triple Lutz. Despite the fall, Sandhu earned 78.41 for 2nd in the short program, behind only Brian Joubert. Johnny Weir (USA) produced an elegant and controlled performance to place 5th in the segment, while Evan Lysacek (USA) finished 8th. Eighteen-year-old Nobunari Oda (織田信成, JPN) continued an impressive Worlds debut with a lively Barber of Seville program, scoring 78.25 for 3rd in the short. Ilia Klimkin (Илья Климкин, RUS) placed 10th after doubling his planned triple flip. Defending World champion Stéphane Lambiel (SUI) had an imperfect skate, including a two-footed triple Axel and quad toe–double toe combination, but his strong program components helped him score 77.41 for 4th. Brian Joubert (FRA) delivered the winning short program, attacking his Die Another Day routine with a quad toe–triple toe and triple Axel to score 80.31. Jeffrey Buttle (CAN) completed the featured group with the highest program-component score of the segment, but jumping errors and a one-point deduction left him 7th in the short. Although Joubert won the segment, the carried-over qualifying results meant Lambiel remained the overall leader with 117.64, followed by Oda on 114.48 and Joubert on 114.36. Buttle stood 4th overall, ahead of Sandhu and Weir, leaving just 0.12 points between Oda and Joubert and a closely contested championship heading into the free skate. British coverage.
