Work continues on the old Century III Mall, but it has now progressed beyond the parking structure. Work is happening inside the old mall moving it one step closer to coming down. When it opened in 1979, Century III Mall was the third-largest enclosed mall in the world, with 1.6 million square feet of space. However, it has since been surpassed by larger malls. Demolition: Demolition of the mall began in 2024. The mall was owned by Moonbeam Capital Investments LLC, a Las Vegas-based company. The Allegheny County District Attorney's office filed criminal charges against the mall's owners. State of the mall: The mall had been vandalized, suffered water damage, and was covered in graffiti and mold. Police and fire officials reported that people frequently broke into the mall, and expressed concerns about the air quality. Cost of demolition: Demolition of the mall was estimated to cost more than $10 million. However, the sale of the 90-acre plot could potentially reimburse the cost.
