The 1981 DeLorean DMC-12 became one of the most recognizable cars of the 1980s, with stainless steel bodywork and iconic gull-wing doors. The DeLorean DMC-12 looked unlike almost anything else on the road, a futuristic sports car that seemed to have arrived several decades early. The DeLorean was born from an ambitious vision for a different kind of sports car, combining Giorgetto Giugiaro's striking wedge design with a stainless-steel body and a distinctive gull-wing door arrangement. Its short production life became only one part of a much larger story, as the DMC-12 eventually gained an extraordinary second life in popular culture. Some vehicles are remembered for their engineering. Others are remembered for the people behind them, the circumstances surrounding them, or the worlds they eventually entered. The DeLorean managed to become all of those things at once, turning one unusual sports car into a piece of automotive history that refuses to disappear.
